FAQ & help

Install, privacy, formats, Pro and support.

How do I install ChatArchivr?

ChatArchivr is available now for Firefox and Chrome: install it from Firefox Add-ons or the Chrome Web Store. The Chrome version also works in Edge and Brave. After installing, open a chat on a supported site and use the toolbar icon or the floating Export button.

Is ChatArchivr the same as AI Chat Archive or ChatArchive?

No. ChatArchivr (spelt with no e) is an independent extension and is not related to AI Chat Archive, ChatArchive or any similarly named product. It is only published under the name ChatArchivr, at chatarchivr.com.

Which sites are supported?

ChatArchivr works on ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini.

Which export formats are there?

Markdown (.md), JSON, HTML and plain text, plus PDF via a clean print view (choose Save to PDF in the print dialog). You can also copy a whole chat as Markdown. Code blocks, tables, lists, links and maths are preserved.

Are there limits or watermarks?

No. Free exports have no daily cap and no watermark.

Can I export all my chats at once?

Not yet. The free version exports one chat at a time, with no limit. Bulk ZIP export is planned for ChatArchivr Pro, which isn't on sale yet. If you need your whole history now, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each offer their own account data export, and the how-to guides explain where to find it.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere. Files are created in your browser and saved to your computer. Saved chats live in the extension's local storage on your device only. ChatArchivr has no servers and no analytics or tracking. The current version makes no network requests of its own. When Pro launches, the only network call will be an optional licence check via ExtensionPay, used for Pro. See the privacy policy.

Why does it need site access?

Only to read the chat you're looking at when you click Export, Copy or Save. It asks for storage and unlimitedStorage, so your settings and saved chats can be kept on your device, and for access to the supported AI chat sites only: ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini. It also uses scripting so it can start working in chat tabs that were already open when you installed it, without a reload. When you click Export, Copy or Save, it also uses scripting to run a small read-only function, packaged with the extension, in that chat tab to read the full text of long code blocks. It can only do that on those chat sites. It asks for nothing else: no all-sites access, tabs or cookies. There's no server and no account, and nothing leaves your device.

Is exporting my chats allowed?

ChatArchivr only exports your own conversations, and only when you ask it to, from pages you already have open. Check each AI service's terms for your own use.

What is ChatArchivr Pro and what will it cost?

Pro is a planned optional paid tier and is not on sale yet. The planned features are bulk ZIP export, Obsidian vault export, full-text search, backup files for moving your library between browsers and devices, saved searches, bulk tag, move or delete, version history, a backup reminder, folders and tags, code-block extraction and filename templates. Restoring a backup file you already have stays free, even if Pro lapses, so your data is never locked. Planned prices (not on sale yet, and they may change): $3.99/month, $29/year or a one-off $49. Everything free today stays free. If Pro launches, payments will be handled by ExtensionPay/Stripe, and ChatArchivr will never see your card details.

Some ChatGPT messages have disappeared. Can ChatArchivr get them back?

No. ChatArchivr exports the messages ChatGPT loads into the chat page. If ChatGPT no longer shows a message, ChatArchivr can't recover it. Try ChatGPT's own search, or request ChatGPT's official data export (Settings, then Data controls, then Export data). The guide ChatGPT messages disappeared? walks through both. To be safe, export important chats while they still show in full.

I use another extension that hides older messages in long chats. Will my export be complete?

Maybe not. ChatArchivr scrolls through the chat and collects the messages the site loads into the page, including ones the site unloads as you scroll. If another extension hides or removes older messages to keep long chats fast, ChatArchivr may not see them. Turn that extension off for the chat (or use its option to show all messages), reload the page, then export. Open the file and skim it to check nothing is missing.

An export broke after a site update. What now?

AI sites change their pages often. Email chatarchivr.support@gmail.com with the site and what went wrong (no chat content needed), and I will fix it as quickly as I can.

How do I contact support?
