ChatGPT messages disappeared? What to check

Some ChatGPT users have reported messages or whole sections of a conversation no longer showing in the chat. This guide covers where to look for the missing text, and how to keep your own copy of important chats so this matters less next time. Where to look for missing messages

Reload, then scroll. Long chats load in parts. Reload the tab, wait for it to finish, and scroll through the whole conversation slowly before deciding something is gone.

ChatGPT's search. Use the search in ChatGPT's sidebar with a few words you remember from the missing part. Some users report that text missing from the chat view still turns up in search.

ChatGPT's data export. In ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. OpenAI emails you a download link to a ZIP file with your chat history. According to OpenAI's help article, the export can take up to 7 days to arrive and the link expires after 24 hours. Users on the OpenAI community forum report finding content in the export that was missing from the live chat.

Tell OpenAI. If the text is gone everywhere, report it through ChatGPT's help centre. Only OpenAI can restore data on its side.

1. Open the chat while it's complete. Go to chatgpt.com and open a conversation you want to keep, ideally soon after you've finished it.

• Export important chats early, for example at the end of a work session, rather than months later.
• Keep the files somewhere you back up, such as a notes app or a synced folder. Markdown works well with Obsidian and most notes apps.
• Request ChatGPT's data export now and then as a full-account backup alongside your own copies.

If an export looks wrong

• Check the page has finished loading. Wait until the last reply has finished generating before you export.
