How to export ChatGPT chats to Markdown
Last updated 18 October 2026
Markdown is the most useful format for keeping AI chats: it's plain text, it opens in any editor, and note apps like Obsidian, Joplin and Logseq read it natively. Here's how to get a ChatGPT conversation into a proper .md file.
Doing it without an extension
You can copy replies one at a time and paste them into a file. That's fine for one or two answers, but it's slow, and it's easy to miss your own prompts.
The account export (Settings → Data controls → Export data) gives you a ZIP file of your chat history and account data, delivered by a download link. See OpenAI's help article. It covers every chat, not one, and turning it into one Markdown file per chat takes a converter you'd have to find or write yourself.
Export with ChatArchivr, step by step
All the ChatArchivr steps on this page use free features: single-chat export in every format, copy as Markdown and the local library.
- Open the chat. Go to chatgpt.com and open the conversation.
- Choose Markdown. Click the ChatArchivr toolbar icon, pick Markdown (.md) in the format menu, and press Export. The floating Export button on the page works too.
- Wait for it to collect the chat. ChatArchivr scrolls through the conversation to collect every message, including ones the page had unloaded.
- Find the file. The .md file saves like a normal download. By default it's named with the date, the source and the chat title, for example 2026-10-16-chatgpt-trip-planning.md.
What the Markdown looks like
The file starts with the chat title as a heading and a short quote block showing the source, the chat's address and when you exported it. Then each message follows under its own heading, You or ChatGPT, with a horizontal rule between messages.
- Code blocks stay fenced and keep their language label, so syntax highlighting works in your editor.
- Tables are turned into GitHub-style Markdown tables.
- Lists, nested lists, task lists, links, quotes and maths come through too.
Copy instead of download
If you'd rather paste the chat into an existing note, press Copy Markdown in the popup. The whole conversation goes to your clipboard in the same format as the file.
Other formats
The same menu also offers JSON (good for scripts), HTML (a standalone page you can open in any browser), plain text and PDF.
If an export looks wrong
- Check the page has finished loading. Wait until the last reply has finished generating before you export.
- Reload and try again. If the popup says the page isn't recognised, reload the tab. The extension starts once the page has loaded.
- Turn off the floating button in Options if it gets in the way. The toolbar icon does the same job.
- Tell me what broke. AI sites change their layouts often, and that can break exports until ChatArchivr is updated. Email chatarchivr.support@gmail.com with the site name and a short description. Please don't send chat content.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT have a Markdown export?
ChatGPT's official export is a full-account ZIP file, delivered by a download link. For other options, check OpenAI's help centre. ChatArchivr saves one whole conversation as a single .md file.
Are code blocks preserved?
Yes. Code blocks stay fenced with their language label, and tables, lists, links and maths are converted too.
Can I export lots of chats at once?
Not yet. Bulk ZIP export is planned for ChatArchivr Pro, which isn't on sale yet. For now, the free version exports one chat at a time, with no limit.
Does it work on chat.openai.com?
Yes. Both chatgpt.com and chat.openai.com are supported.
ChatArchivr is available now for Firefox and Chrome
ChatArchivr is free, with no account, no servers and no watermark. The Chrome version also works in Edge and Brave.
