How to export a ChatGPT chat to PDF
Last updated 18 October 2026
Saving a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF isn't always straightforward. You can get a tidy, complete PDF of a conversation, either with your browser's own print function or with ChatArchivr's clean print view. This guide covers both, plus what to watch out for with long chats.
The built-in options
Browser print. Open the chat and press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac), then choose Save as PDF. It costs nothing and needs no extension. The catch is that you're printing the web app, not the conversation: sidebars, buttons and the input box can end up in the PDF, code blocks may be cut off at the page edge, and on long chats some messages may not have loaded when you print.
ChatGPT's data export. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Data controls → Export data. OpenAI sends you an email (or a text message) with a download link to a ZIP file containing your chat history and other account data. According to OpenAI's help article, the export can take up to 7 days to arrive, and the link expires after 24 hours. It's the official way to get everything at once, but it covers your whole account rather than one chat, and it isn't available for every plan. For other ways to save a chat, check OpenAI's help centre.
Export with ChatArchivr, step by step
All the ChatArchivr steps on this page use free features: single-chat export in every format, copy as Markdown and the local library.
- Open the conversation. Go to chatgpt.com (or chat.openai.com) and open the chat you want to keep.
- Start a PDF export. Click the ChatArchivr toolbar icon, pick PDF from the format menu and press Export. You can also use the floating Export button on the page.
- Let it collect the whole chat. ChatArchivr scrolls through the conversation and gathers every message, including ones ChatGPT has unloaded from the page, then puts your scroll position back.
- Save from the print view. A clean print view opens with just the conversation: your messages and ChatGPT's replies, with headings, tables and code blocks. The print dialog opens on its own. Choose Save as PDF (or Microsoft Print to PDF) as the destination and save.
Tips for a better PDF
- Long chats: wait for the export to finish before you do anything else in the tab. Very long conversations take a few seconds to collect.
- Paper size and margins are set in your browser's print dialog, so you can switch between A4 and Letter there.
- Images: images that have a normal web address are kept. Very large embedded images may come through only as their description, so check the PDF if pictures matter.
- Want something editable? Export to Markdown or HTML instead. You can always print those later.
- Keep a copy for later: press Save to library as well. The chat is stored on your device only, and you can re-export it as a PDF from the library at any time.
The PDF is created on your own computer by your browser. ChatArchivr has no servers, so the conversation never goes anywhere.
If an export looks wrong
- Check the page has finished loading. Wait until the last reply has finished generating before you export.
- Reload and try again. If the popup says the page isn't recognised, reload the tab. The extension starts once the page has loaded.
- Turn off the floating button in Options if it gets in the way. The toolbar icon does the same job.
- Tell me what broke. AI sites change their layouts often, and that can break exports until ChatArchivr is updated. Email chatarchivr.support@gmail.com with the site name and a short description. Please don't send chat content.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT export a chat to PDF by itself?
You can print the page from your browser, or request a full account data export from ChatGPT's settings, which arrives as a ZIP file. Check OpenAI's help centre for the current options.
Will a long conversation be complete?
ChatArchivr scrolls through the whole chat and collects every message before it builds the print view, so the middle of a long chat isn't skipped.
Is the PDF created on a server?
No. The print view is built in your browser and your browser's own print dialog saves the PDF to your computer.
Does the free version add a watermark?
No. Free exports have no watermark and no daily limit.
ChatArchivr is available now for Firefox and Chrome
ChatArchivr is free, with no account, no servers and no watermark. The Chrome version also works in Edge and Brave.
