How to export Claude chats

Last updated 18 October 2026

Claude conversations often hold long pieces of writing, code and analysis you'll want to keep. Here's how to save a single Claude chat as a file you own, and what Anthropic's own export gives you.

Claude's built-in options

Copy and paste. You can copy replies one at a time. It's quick for one answer, but slow for a whole conversation.

Export your data. On the web or in Claude Desktop, go to Settings → Privacy → Export data. Anthropic emails you a download link to your conversations and account data. The link expires 24 hours after delivery, and you can't start an export from the iOS or Android app. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner has to allow it first. See Anthropic's help article. It's useful as a full backup, but it covers your account rather than one chat.

Export with ChatArchivr, step by step

All the ChatArchivr steps on this page use free features: single-chat export in every format, copy as Markdown and the local library.

  1. Open the conversation on claude.ai. Open the chat you want to export in your browser.
  2. Pick a format. Click the ChatArchivr toolbar icon and choose Markdown, PDF, JSON, HTML or plain text.
  3. Export. Press Export, or use the floating Export button on the page. ChatArchivr collects the whole conversation, including earlier messages that have scrolled out of view.
  4. Save or keep it in your library. The file downloads to your computer. If you also want to re-export or search it later, press Save to library to store it on your device.

Which format should you choose?

  • Markdown for notes apps and version control. Messages are labelled You and Claude.
  • PDF to share or archive. A clean print view opens, and you choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.
  • JSON for scripts or your own tools. Each message has its role and its Markdown text.
  • HTML for a standalone page that opens in any browser.
  • Text when you just want the words.

A note on artifacts and attachments

ChatArchivr exports the conversation as it appears in the chat: your messages and Claude's replies, including code blocks and tables. Files you uploaded aren't included. Content that only appears in a separate panel, such as some artifacts, may not be included either, so download anything important from that panel directly.

Everything happens in your browser. ChatArchivr has no servers and no analytics, and it only reads the chat when you click.

If an export looks wrong

  • Check the page has finished loading. Wait until the last reply has finished generating before you export.
  • Reload and try again. If the popup says the page isn't recognised, reload the tab. The extension starts once the page has loaded.
  • Turn off the floating button in Options if it gets in the way. The toolbar icon does the same job.
  • Tell me what broke. AI sites change their layouts often, and that can break exports until ChatArchivr is updated. Email chatarchivr.support@gmail.com with the site name and a short description. Please don't send chat content.
