How to export Gemini chats

Google Gemini has some export options of its own, but they work one response at a time or cover your whole activity history. Here's how to save a complete conversation from gemini.google.com as a single file.

Gemini's built-in options

Share & export. Below a Gemini response, choose Share & export, then Export to Docs (this saves a new doc in Google Drive) or Draft in Gmail (this needs a Gmail account). See Google's help article. Export options can vary for Workspace accounts. It works per response, and the result lives in your Google account rather than as a local file.

Google Takeout. At takeout.google.com, choose My Activity → Gemini Apps to download your Gemini Apps activity, including chats. See Download your Gemini Apps data. Google emails you a link once the archive is ready, which can take from a few hours to a few days. It's an archive of your whole account's activity, not one tidy file per conversation.

Export with ChatArchivr, step by step

All the ChatArchivr steps on this page use free features: single-chat export in every format, copy as Markdown and the local library.

1. Open the conversation. Go to gemini.google.com and open the chat.
2. Click the ChatArchivr icon. The popup recognises the Gemini page. You can also use the floating Export button.
3. Choose a format and export. Pick Markdown, PDF, JSON, HTML or plain text and press Export. ChatArchivr collects every message, including earlier ones.
4. Save the file. The file saves to your computer, with messages labelled You and Gemini. For PDF, choose Save as PDF in the print dialog that opens.

Tips

• Into Google Docs anyway? Export to HTML or copy as Markdown, then paste. Recent versions of Google Docs can also import Markdown.
• Code and tables are kept: code blocks keep their language label and tables become Markdown tables.
• Keep a local archive: Save to library stores the chat on your device only, so you can find it by title and re-export it later in any format.
• Workspace accounts: if you use Gemini through work or school, check your organisation's rules before exporting conversations.

ChatArchivr only asks for access to gemini.google.com and the other supported chat sites, plus storage and unlimitedStorage to keep your settings and saved chats on your device. It also uses scripting so it can start working in a Gemini tab that was already open when you installed it, without a reload. When you click Export, Copy or Save, it can also use scripting to run a small read-only function, packaged with the extension, that reads the full text of long code blocks on sites whose code viewer only shows part of the code, such as ChatGPT. It doesn't need access to your Google account or any other site.

If an export looks wrong

• Check the page has finished loading. Wait until the last reply has finished generating before you export.
• Reload and try again. If the popup says the page isn't recognised, reload the tab. The extension starts once the page has loaded.
• Turn off the floating button in Options if it gets in the way. The toolbar icon does the same job.
• Tell me what broke. AI sites change their layouts often, and that can break exports until ChatArchivr is updated. Email chatarchivr.support@gmail.com with the site name and a short description. Please don't send chat content.

FAQ

Can Gemini export a whole conversation?

Gemini's Share & export works on individual responses (to Docs or Gmail), and Google Takeout downloads your Gemini Apps activity as an account archive. ChatArchivr saves one whole conversation as a single file.

Does ChatArchivr need my Google login?

No. It reads the chat that's already open in your browser tab, and only when you click.

Where are my exports stored?

On your own computer, saved as a normal download. Library copies stay in the extension's storage on your device.

Is ChatArchivr a Google product?

No. It's independent and not affiliated with Google.
