How to export Grok chats

Last updated 18 October 2026

Grok runs both at grok.com and inside X at x.com/i/grok. Neither makes it easy to save a single conversation as a tidy file. Here's how to do it, and what the alternatives are.

Built-in and manual options

Copy and paste. You can copy replies by hand. That's fine for a short exchange.

Account data download. xAI's consumer FAQ says you can download your data from Settings → Data Controls on grok.com or in the Grok app. It doesn't say what format the download is in. If you use Grok on X, xAI points you to the X help centre instead. Either way, expect your whole account's data rather than a readable copy of one chat.

Browser print. Ctrl+P / Cmd+P → Save as PDF works, but you'll usually get page furniture in the PDF, and long chats can come out incomplete.

Export with ChatArchivr, step by step

All the ChatArchivr steps on this page use free features: single-chat export in every format, copy as Markdown and the local library.

  1. Open the Grok conversation. Use grok.com, or Grok inside X at x.com/i/grok.
  2. Open ChatArchivr. Click the toolbar icon. The popup confirms it has recognised the Grok page. On X, it only works on the Grok pages, not on the rest of x.com.
  3. Choose a format and export. Pick Markdown, PDF, JSON, HTML or text and press Export. ChatArchivr scrolls through the conversation and collects every message.
  4. Keep it. The file saves to your downloads. Press Save to library if you also want a copy you can search by title and re-export later.

Good to know

  • Permissions: on X, ChatArchivr only asks for access to x.com/i/grok, not to all of x.com.
  • Formatting: code blocks keep their language, and tables, lists and links are converted. Messages are labelled You and Grok.
  • Images: generated images that have a normal web address are kept as image links. Very large embedded images may come through only as a placeholder.
  • Site changes: AI sites change their pages often. If an export looks wrong, email chatarchivr.support@gmail.com with the site and what happened. You don't need to send any chat content.

If an export looks wrong

  • Check the page has finished loading. Wait until the last reply has finished generating before you export.
  • Reload and try again. If the popup says the page isn't recognised, reload the tab. The extension starts once the page has loaded.
  • Turn off the floating button in Options if it gets in the way. The toolbar icon does the same job.
  • Tell me what broke. AI sites change their layouts often, and that can break exports until ChatArchivr is updated. Email chatarchivr.support@gmail.com with the site name and a short description. Please don't send chat content.
